TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Nyepi 2026 falls on March 19 and marks a total 24-hour shutdown across Bali. This year’s ritual is unique as it coincides with the Islamic tradition of Takbiran, requiring coordination between religious communities.

During this period, all transportation, including ferry services, will cease operation temporarily to honor the day. Understanding these schedules is essential for both residents and travelers on the island.

What is Nyepi?

Nyepi is a Balinese Hindu tradition that marks the start of the Saka New Year. For 24-hours starting at 6:00 AM on March 19, 2026, the entire island will come to a complete standstill to focus on spiritual purification and self-reflection.

During this period, everyone in Bali is required to remain indoors, maintain silence, and avoid all forms of public activity or travel.

Nyepi Compliance Regulation

The local government and religious authorities have established a mutual agreement to ensure the sanctity of Nyepi 2026. All residents and visitors must adhere to the following regulations:

Restricted Activities: Staying indoors is mandatory for everyone on the island. The use of firecrackers, loudspeakers, and excessive lighting is strictly prohibited to maintain total silence and focus.

Service Suspension: Land, sea, and air transportation will cease operation for 24 hours. Additionally, radio and television broadcasts will pause, and mobile data services will be deactivated from March 19 at 6:00 a.m. local time until March 20 at 6:00 a.m. local time.

Commercial Restrictions: Tourism and hospitality businesses are forbidden from using “Nyepi” as a branding tool or marketing theme for commercial promotions.

Ferry Services Closures and Schedules

For Nyepi 2026, all major ferry crossings connecting Bali to neighboring islands will be temporarily suspended for 24 hours. This shutdown affects the Ketapang-Gilimanuk route between Bali and East Java, as well as the Padang Bai-Lembar route connecting Bali to West Nusa Tenggara.

Operation at these ports will cease from the morning of March 19 until the morning of March 20, 2026. Travelers must plan their trips accordingly, as no ferry operations will be available during this period.
