Jakarta Globe ndonesia welcomed 1.25 million foreign tourists in April, pushing total arrivals in the first four months of 2026 to 4.68 million, the highest January-April tally since 2020.
Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) showed foreign tourist arrivals rose 14.75% month-to-month and 7.22% year-on-year to 1.25 million visits in April. The January-April total reached 4.68 million visits, up 8.24% from the same period last year.
“The cumulative number of foreign tourist arrivals from January to April 2026 reached 4.68 million visits, an increase of 8.24% compared to the same period in 2025. This is the highest achievement for the January-April period since 2020,” BPS Deputy for Statistical Methodology and Information Pudji Ismartini said on Tuesday.
Malaysia remained the largest source of foreign visitors, accounting for 16.65% (roughly 208 thousand visits) of total arrivals. Australia followed with 12.65%, while China contributed 10.73%.
“The largest number of foreign tourist visits was made by travelers holding Malaysian passports, accounting for 16.65% of total arrivals. Australia ranked second with 12.65%, followed by China with 10.73%,” Pudji said.

She added that arrivals from Malaysia, Australia, and China increased both on a monthly and annual basis.
Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport remained the country’s busiest gateway for foreign tourists, with Australian travelers accounting for the largest share of arrivals.
“The increase in foreign tourist arrivals was supported by holiday periods in Australia and the spring holiday season in France,” Pudji said.
Meanwhile, domestic tourism weakened after the Eid al-Fitr holiday period. BPS recorded 97.55 million domestic tourist trips in April, down 22.79% from March and 24.14% from a year earlier. However, cumulative domestic tourist trips reached 417.06 million during January-April, up 1.48% year-on-year and the highest level for the period since 2021.
Indonesia also recorded a decline in outbound travel. The number of trips made by Indonesians traveling abroad stood at 643,660 in April, down 18.85% from the previous month and 30.54% from April 2025.
“On a cumulative basis, outbound trips by Indonesian travelers reached 3.14 million during January-April 2026, a decline of 3.49% compared to the same period last year,” Pudji said.
