Jakarta (ANTARA) – The government renewed its commitment to bolstering electricity system reliability to prevent recurrence of recent outages in Java and Bali, emphasizing action on primary energy, power plants, and energy transition.

Head of the Government Communications Agency (Bakom) Muhammad Qodari noted that the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry had ordered the State Electricity Company (PLN) to ensure adequate primary energy supplies, strengthen supply chains, improve operational readiness, and accelerate maintenance of key generators.

He also underscored the importance of stakeholders strengthening coordination to secure stable electricity supplies, according to a statement received in Jakarta on Friday.

To that end, Qodari added, the ministry’s Directorate General of Electricity on June 25 gathered PLN and independent power producers at a forum to align steps toward boosting system reliability for Java and Bali.

“The government will continue strengthening oversight and risk mitigation across all primary energy supply chains, looking into generator maintenance planning, energy reserves, and operational coordination among stakeholders,” he affirmed.

He deemed the corrective approach necessary to reduce the risk of future large-scale blackouts and ensure “stable and sustainable electricity services” for the public.

Qodari also highlighted the government’s target of adding 69.5 gigawatts (GW) of generating capacity by 2034, as outlined in a planning document issued by PLN.

He noted that 42.6 GW, or 61 percent of the added capacity, will come from new and renewable energy (NRE) sources, while 10.3 GW will be provided by stocking technologies such as batteries and pumped storage hydropower.

“Meanwhile, fossil-based energy, amounting to 16.6 GW or 24 percent of the added capacity, will be mainly generated by gas-fired power plants to maintain system flexibility and reliability,” he added.

On energy diversification, Qodari highlighted the B50 mandate, which took effect on July 1 and requires diesel fuel to contain a 50-percent biofuel blend. President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to officially launch the policy this month.

“This direction development forms part of the energy transition roadmap designed to enhance NRE mix, strengthen the electricity system’s flexibility, gradually reduce dependence on fossil energy, support the green economy, and achieve the net-zero emissions target,” the Bakom chief concluded.
